He stuffed a manila folder with old notes and photocopies. He left his office and walked across the hall to Hillary, Frank’s P.A., who was busily typing at her desk. “Frank in?” Zach asked casually.

“Oh, I’m sorry Zach. You just missed him, he’s gone to lunch. He’ll be back in half an hour.”

Zach knew he just missed him. He had been dictating random notes and memos to Renee all morning, continually glancing over at Frank’s office, waiting for him to take his lunch break. He knew that was his best opportunity. That would give him plenty of time. Despite his position of power, Frank was petty about his lunch break. Excruciatingly petty. He always took his half hour to the minute, returning not a single second before he was due.

Zach smiled politely. “You don’t mind if I leave this on his desk?”

Hillary put her hand out for the folder. “I’ll do that for you.”

Zach pulled it back. “No, you look busy. I can do it.”

“Okay, I’ll let him know you left it.”

Zach walked past Hillary’s desk and opened the door to Frank’s office. He looked around, just to double check Frank was gone, then stepped inside. He was tempted to close the door behind him, but it would look suspicious and Hillary would most certainly stick her head in to see what was going on. Instead, Zach left it ajar. He crossed the room to Frank’s desk and tried to open his top drawer. It was locked.

“Shit,” he whispered under his breath.

A key!

He must have kept a spare key to his desk here somewhere!

Zach put the manila folder down and quickly started rummaging across Frank’s pristine desk, through pencil holders and paperclip trays and disc containers and business card cases. Nothing. Frank was too damn neat for his own good. He was also too damn possessive. He labelled everything. Everything that was his had to have his name on it. Including his secret hiding place, Zach thought.

On a hunch, Zach lifted up Frank’s marble and silver plated name plaque. There was the small key he was looking for, underneath the plaque.

Zach unlocked the drawer and opened it, then reached inside his pocket for the handkerchief he'd stashed there. He pulled it out and unraveled it, but the BMW key slipped out and fell on the floor. Zach crouched down to retrieve it and heard…

Snip!

It was the delicate sound of the office door closing, ever so gently. Zach glanced up over the desktop and saw Frank standing with his back to the closed door, grinning at him. “My, my.” There was an unmistakable hint of glee in his voice. “Who have we here?”

Zach felt the BMW key under his fingers. He gently flicked it across the carpet, under the desk, then stood, trying not to, but successfully looking as guilty as hell.

“Frank! I was just putting a file on your desk. But now that I’m here I’ve suddenly realized there’s a few notes missing.” He quickly picked the manila folder filled with junk papers back off Frank’s desk.
